Wolverines Claw Past Mohawks

Picture
Wednesday, January 2, 2013
WESTWOOD--- Senior Jonathan Allegrezza led the Wolverines with 11 points and 10 rebounds and junior Paul Calobrisi added 10 points to help lead Westwood past visiting Millis, 51-32.  Westwood (3-1) struggled to find their rhythm early on, but a 17-0 run to start the third quarter buried the Mohawks.  Sophomore Eric Bamford and junior Bo Berluti filled in nicely at the point guard position, guiding a balanced Westwood attack the entire night.  Seniors Casey McQuillan, Alex Berluti, and Eric Burgess all played stellar perimeter defense, helping to hold Millis to only 4 made field goals and 14 points in the first half.  Westwood's interior defense was led by senior captain John Gebhard, who also contributed 4 points and 4 rebounds.  The Wolverines will next play host to visiting TVL rivals the  Ashland Clockers on Friday night.

Wolverines Outlast Clockers

Picture
Friday, January 4, 2013
WESTWOOD--- A white-hot start from the Ashland Clockers appeared as if it might signal a quick night for Westwood and an end to the Wolverines three-game winning streak.   The next three quarters told a different story, however, as the Wolverines fought back, eventually earning a 54-45 home victory.  In the early going, Westwood was not able to muster much offense, other than two long three-point field goals by junior Paul Calobrisi, as the Ashland zone smothered Westwood's attempts to get the ball inside to their dominant big men.  Combined with excellent shooting from Ashland, which did not miss on its first 8 field goal attempts, and a bevy of Westwood turnovers, the first quarter ended with the Clockers holding a commanding 21-9 lead.
The second quarter, however, saw the Clockers come back to earth with their shooting and the pace of the game shifted more to the Wolverines' style.  By the time the teams headed to the locker room at the half, Ashland's lead had been cut to 29-20.
Westwood then came out in the second half with a renewed energy.  Starting four guards, the Wolverines began to find holes in the Ashland zone, slashing through gaps, getting to the free throw line, and making open shots.  Sophomore Will Jessup (9 points) and juniors Bo Berluti (5 points, 4 assists) and Calobrisi (13 points) brought Westwood all the way back to tie the game at 36 heading into the final frame.  In the fourth, another guard, junior Danny Young (6 points), knocked down two key three-point field goals and senior guard Alex Berluti payed stifling defense to help Westwood (4-1) emerge with the come-from-behind  victory. The win extended the Wolverines' winning streak to four games and demonstrated the team's resolve.  Once again, the depth of Westwood was simply too much for Ashland to match.  That depth has become the signature of Steve St. Martin's squad, which has benefited from key contributions from different players in each of their four consecutive wins.  The consistently dominant inside presence of senior captains Jonathan Allegrezza (11 points) and John Gebhard (6 points) also continued on both ends of the floor against the Clockers.  Next up for Westwood is an early-season battle for one of the top spots in the Tri-Valley League as the Wolverines travel to Medfield to take on the rival Warriors on Tuesday night.

Wolverines Drop Opener on Road in Medway

MEDWAY---  Senior John Gebhard's game-tying three-point attempt rattled out in the final seconds as the Medway Mustangs hung on to win their home opener over the visiting Westwood Wolverines, 65-62.  Medway (1-1), which led most the night, clung to a lead in the final few minutes and hung on to earn their first victory of the season.  Leading by just one point with 13.6 seconds to play, Medway made two critical free throws to push the lead back to 3.  After advancing the ball past half court, Westwood Coach Steven St. Martin called timeout in an attempt to draw up a play to tie the game.  Out of the timeout, the Wolverines (0-1) managed to get the ball into the hands of their senior center, who, despite having already suffered a gash over his right eye earlier in the game, was a dominant force in the paint for Westwood.  The inbounds pass came to Sophomore Eric Bamford, who passed to senior Joe Lally, who then passed to Gebhard for the shot.  Medway was led all night by Senior Matt Ozzella, whose physical play on the glass and consistent and clutch performance from the free throw line (11-15) kept Medway in the lead throughout the second half.  Senior captain Jonathan Allegrezza played well for Westwood, which seeks its first win of the season in the home-opener on Tuesday night against Bellingham.

Wolverines Eliminated by Vineyarders

Thursday, March 8, 2012
The Westwood Wolverines magical tournament run came to a halt at the hands of Martha's Vineyard on Wednesday night.  Having already scored upsets over the sixth seeded Norton Lancers and the third seeded Norwell Clippers, Westwood hoped that they would be able to sneak up on another higher seed.  This time, however, the second seeded Vineyarders were too much for Coach Steve St. Martin's squad.  Despite 30 points from junior Joe Lally, Westwood fell by a score of 89-66.  Trailing by 6 at the half, Westwood closed the gap down to 2 early in the third quarter, but never got any closer.  Martha's Vineyard's well-balanced, relentless attack earned them a spot in the Division III South Tournament Finals on Saturday at UMass-Boston, where they will battle the top seed Wareham.

Wolverines Clip Norwell,
Head to Tournament Semi-Finals

Saturday, March 3, 2012
Thanks to stifling defense, great half-time adjustments, and hot shooting by senior Eric Tanery and junior Joe Lally, the Westwood Wolverines pulled off yet another MIAA Division 3 South Tournament upset by knocking off the No. 3 seeded Norwell Clippers, 67-61 on Saturday.  Trailing by four at the half, No. 11 Westwood was beaten badly on the glass during the first sixteen minutes.  Norwell (19-3), which won the South Shore League this year and had not lost a game at home all year, showed their strength in the first half, scoring both inside and out and dominating the Wolverines physically.  Norwell forwards Jordan Jenkins (17 points, 5 3-point field goals made) and Peter Marchetti (19 points) torched the Wolverines in the first two frames, knocking down three pointer after three pointer.  This allowed the Clippers to close the half on a 7-0 run and take a 33-29 lead into the locker room.
The second half was a different story.  On the first possession of the third quarter, Westwood's Glenn Parsons stole the ball in the back court from Norwell's Billy Sewall and completed a layup and the foul for a conventional three-point play, cutting the lead to 33-32.  A quick 6-0 by the Clippers, thanks to three pointers by Sewall and Marchetti, appeared to weather the Westwood storm. From that point on, however, the Wolverines turned to their trademark: pressure defense.  Westwood took Norwell forward Jordan Jenkins, who had scored 14 points in the first half, out of the game by rotating multiple defenders and pressuring him all the way up and down the floor.  In addition, the Wolverines, who allowed myriad second-chance points in the first half, controlled the defensive glass in the final sixteen minutes, thanks in large part to senior Mike Keane (6 points, 9 rebounds) and junior Jonathan Allegrezza (4 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks).  Alegrezza's interior defense also discouraged Norwell from taking the ball to the basket and forced them to settle for contested shots from the perimeter.  Norwell senior Nick Volpe, a 1,000 point scorer for the Clippers, was held to just 11 points 16 shots, thanks to outstanding physical defense by senior Eric Tanery and sophomore Bo Berluti, both of whom give up almost 5 inches to the 6'5" Volpe.
On the other hand, it was the impressive scoring display put on by Westwood's Tanery, who pitched in all seventeen of his points in the second half, that allowed the Wolverines to open up their lead in the fourth quarter.  Tanery and Lally (18 points) combined to knock down several key three-point field goals and mid-range shots that deflated the Norwell team and crowd throughout the final frame.  Westwood managed to open up their lead to as many as 11 in the final quarter and hung on down the stretch, despite missing six of ten free throws in the final two minutes.  The game was sealed when, after a Tanery miss from the free throw line, senior Erik Maloney (6 points, 2-3, 3PA) collected an offensive rebound to maintain possession for the Wolverines and make it impossible for Norwell to complete a comeback.
Next up for the Wolverines will be another tough contest against Martha's Vineyard Regional High School.  The Vineyard's come into the game as the No. 2 seed, having lost only two games all year.  The game will be played on a neutral court at Taunton High School on Wednesday, March 7, at 5:30 PM.  Neither team has been in a DIII South final since 1993, so the winner of that contest will advance to UMass-Boston and end a long drought for their school.

Westwood Stuns Norton to Advance in MIAA Tournament

The Westwood Wolverines traveled to Norton and defeated the Tri-Valley League regular-season champions, 54-50, on Wednesday. Westwood was led by senior captains Mike Keane (10 points, 8 rebounds) and Glenn Parsons (13 points) and junior guard Joe Lally (10 points), but it was the Wolverines' defense that proved the difference.  Westwood will next travel to Norwell to face the third-seeded Clippers on Saturday evening at 6 PM.

Wolverines Draw Norton in Opening Round of
MIAA Tournament

In the end, Westwood will get one more shot at redemption.  After twice falling to Tri-Valley League rival Norton during the regular season, the Wolverines will get one more shot at the Lancers in the first round of the Division III South tournament.  On Wednesday night, 11th-ranked Westwood (12-8) will travel to Norton to face the TVL Champions, ranked 6th in Divison III by the MIAA committee.  Norton (15-5) is led by Steve Burrill and Colin Feeney, both of whom have hurt Westwood during their two matchups.  Burrill, a 6'3" senior, scored 30 points in the Lancers 74-62 victory over Westwood on February 10, including 7 three-point field goals. Feeney was also a dominant force in that game, collecting 20 points and 12 rebounds.  Back in early January, Norton easily defeated Westwood, 73-55, thanks to strong play again from Burrill (29 points) and Feeney (17 points, 9 rebounds), as well as James Keating.  Westwood did not help the cause by missing 18 of 30 free throws in that game.  On Wednesday, the Wolverines will have a chance to avenge those two losses if they can contain Norton's two stars and continue to get steady play from their deep roster.  This depth is what truly separates Westwood from Norton.  The Wolverines 12 wins this season featured six different leading scorers and many different starting lineups.  Coach Steve St. Martin played at least ten players in every game, sometimes going as deep as fourteen.  This has allowed Westwood to remain fresh and has helped them fight through a number of key injuries.  It is Westwood's hope that this depth will prove invaluable in the tournament, as it will take an entire team effort for the Wolverines to make a run deep into March.

In what has become a frustrating second half of the season, the Westwood Wolverines completed the regular season by dropping both games of their own Riley Hoop Classic.  Following a loss to Norwood on Sunday, Westwood battled but lost to the Spy Ponders of Arlington on Tuesday night.  The loss brought the Wolverines final regular season record to 12-8.  And while this represents a drastic improvement over last year's 6-14 record and also is good enough to get Westwood to the MIAA Division III Tournament for the first time in six years, the second half of the season did not go as hoped for the Wolverines.  Fourteen games into the season, the team stood at 11-3 and had high hopes of bringing home a Tri-Valley League title.  After losing 5 of 6 to close out the season, however, Westwood now hopes to recapture the magic that gave the team so much confidence earlier in the year.
On Sunday night, after watching King Phillip earn a trip to the Riley Hoop Classic Championship with a hard-fought victory over Arlington, Westwood tried to build some momentum heading into the MIAA tournament against Norwood.  Continuing their trend of being plagued by slow starts, the Wolverines fell behind the Mustangs in the first half.  Hot shooting from Norwood forward Daron English and strong play from Sean O'Neil and Tom Munro helped pace the Mustangs throughout the night.  Westwood made a run in the second half, thanks to strong play from sophomore guard Danny Young and senior forward Glenn Parsons, the Wolverines representative on the All-tournament team, but were unable to overcome the deficit and fell to Norwood, 71-60.
In the consolation game on Tuesday night, Westwood got off to a much better start, taking a 10-2 lead over Arlington mid-way through the first quarter, thanks in part to 4 assists by junior point guard Joe Lally.  The beginning of an outstanding night for Arlington guard David Shin, however, quickly eliminated the Westwood lead and put Arlington ahead 19-17 at the end of the frame.  Continued back and forth action, featuring excellent shooting by the Spy Ponders and some athletic finishes around the basket by Westwood sent the teams into the locker room with Arlington ahead 31-27.
The lead was never more than four for the first seven minutes of the third quarter and the teams appeared headed into the final frame locked up in a tight clash.  The final minute of the third, however, saw the Spy Ponders' full-court pressure cause a series of Westwood turnovers, resulting in 5 quick Arlington points.  As a result, a 49-45 game quickly transformed into a 54-45 game at the end of the third and forced the Wolverines to, once again, play from behind.
Demonstrating their trademark resiliency, Westwood did not roll over given the deficit.  Thanks to great energy from forwards Jonathan Allegrezza, Mike Keane, and Daniel Roache, Westwood went on a 9-0 run to cut the Arlington lead to 56-54 with just under 5 minutes to play.  The teams exchanged missed free-throws before Shin took over for Arlington.  His sixth three point-field goal of the game put Arlington up 59-54 with four and a half minutes to play.  After an Allegrezza basket cut the lead back to three, Shin converted another three-pointer, his seventh, this time while also being fouled.  The four-point play upped the Arlington lead to 63-56 with under 4 minutes to play.  Another Westwood turnover and two more free-throws by Shin, who finished with 30 points, put Arlington back up by 9.  Westwood made one final push to close the gap to four points with 35 seconds left, but the Spy Ponders made their free-throws down the stretch to hang on for a 71-62 victory.
In the tournament championship, King Phillip defeated Norwood, 58-50, behind a strong game from tournament Most Valuable Player, Jake Layman.

Lally Leads Westwood into Post-Season with
Comeback Win at Millis

Picture
Tuesday, January 31, 2012
For the first time in six years, the Westwood Wolverines boys basketball team will dance into the postseason. Thanks to a hard-fought 73-67 victory over the upstart Millis Mohawks, Westwood clinched their spot in the Division III South tournament with their tenth win of the season.  Junior Joe Lally scored a season-high 28 points, including back-to-back three pointers that keyed a third quarter rally, bringing Westwood back from down 11 to within 2 at the end of the frame.  The second half comeback by the Wolverines was not their first of the day, as Millis jumped out to a large lead early in the game and led by 8 points at the end of the first quarter. This was not the first time this year that Westwood had fallen behind by double-digits in the first quarter, a trend that Coach Steve St. Martin hopes will not continue.  The Wolverines, however, steadied the ship in the second, getting some key defensive stops and several second-chance points from junior John Gebhard (9 points, 10 rebounds), junior Jonathan Allegrezza (5 points, 7 rebounds), and senior Mike Keane (12 rebounds).   The Wolverines' run brought them into the locker room tied at 31.
Millis, however, came out strong again to start the third quarter, led by senior forward Anthony DellaCamera, whose 23 points led the Mohawks, and senior guard, Derek Latosek.  But Lally, who scored 13 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter, proved too much for the upstart Millis squad to handle.  The junior point guard took over the game, draining one clutch shot after another, while also handing out a team-high five assists.  Down the stretch, Westwood managed to get some key stops, thanks to excellent defensive play from senior Glenn Parsons (3 steals), and make enough of their free throws to hold off the Mohawks.  In addition to clinching the post-season, the win also allowed St. Martin's squad to keep pace with the Tri-Valley League leading Norton Lancers, who continue to lead Westwood by one game.

Wolverines Roll Over Hawks

At the high school level, depth is not an easy thing to come by.  For the Westwood Wolverines, however, it has become their trademark.  With thirteen different players scoring on Tuesday night, Westwood earned their third consecutive win, a 66-37 triumph over the visiting Bellingham Hawks.  Thanks to a hot start from senior captain Glenn Parsons (11 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals), the Wolverines roared out to an 18-3 lead and led by ten at the end of the first frame.  Bellingham made a run to start the second quarter, but Westwood managed to weather the storm and increased their lead at the half to a comfortable 35-20 margin.  It was more of the same in the second half for Westwood, which was led by an outstanding performance from junior Jonathan Allegrezza, whose 13 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 assists, provided outstanding spark and consistency off the bench.  Also making important contributions for Westwood were junior guard Joe Lally (6 points, 5 assists), who proved that he does not need to lead the team in scoring in order to be a leader on the offensive end, and junior Graydon Decamp, who contributed 4 points and 5 rebounds off the bench.  The team's strong defensive effort was led by senior Eric Tanery, junior John Gebhard, and junior Eric Burgess.  The win moved Westwood to 8-3 on the season, maintaining their hold on second place in the Tri-Valley League, still two games behind the 10-1 Norton Lancers.  Another tough TVL match-up takes place on Friday, when Westwood travels to Holliston to take on the rival Panthers.

Westwood Completes Sweep of Holliston

Picture
Friday, January 27, 2012
The vibe is certainly different around this year's Westwood Wolverines basketball team.  Coming into Friday's game at rival Holliston, Westwood had won three in a row to move into second place in the Tri-Valley League.  The team has been getting contributions from everyone on the roster. They have been able to win games with scores in the 60s, as well as games with scores in the 40s.  They have been able to win games comfortably, as well as games that came down to the final shot.  But the most obvious difference has been with the team's mentality.  This year's Wolverines squad has an air of confidence that has been missing.  This edition of the Wolverines knows that every night they step on the floor, they have a chance to win. Friday night in Holliston, things were no different.  And while Westwood, now 9-3 in Tri-Valley League play, would leave Holliston with a 60-54 victory, completing the season sweep of the Panthers was not easy.
Both teams came out of the gate relatively flat, missing on several easy shot attempts and turning the ball over with regularity.  By the time the first quarter had ended, it appeared this would be a typical, tight, Westwood-Holliston clash, with the Panthers leading 14-9.  Between quarters, an animated Westwood huddle appeared to help turn the tide.  The Wolverines came out flying in the second quarter, and tied the game within the first minute, thanks to an Erik Maloney layup and a three point field goal by Eric Tanery.  Maloney (6 points) was a difference-maker off the bench throughout the game, contributing key plays on both ends of the floor.  By the time the game reached the half, Westwood had taken a 28-23 advantage, having held Hollistion to only two field goals in the second quarter.
The third quarter was all Wolverines as they increased their lead to 14.  Junior point guard Joe Lally helped guide the offense, dishing out assists and contributing 6 points of his own in the quarter.  The real star for Westwood, though, was senior co-captain Mike Keane, whose season-high 19 points, and dominant inside presence set the tone after the slow start.  Keane was also a perfect 7-7 from the free-throw line, an area where the Wolverines had struggled in recent weeks.  Also helping the cause with strong play was junior John Gebhard, whose 9 points and 13 rebounds kept the Panthers big men in foul trouble.
Holliston, now 3-8 in Tri-Valley League play, did not go away, however, making the game close in the fourth quarter through pressure defense that forced an abundance of Westwood turnovers.  Holliston guard Malcolm Navarro scored 13 of his team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter, including a three-pointer in the final thirty seconds to cut the Westwood lead to 57-54.  Immediately after that shot, a five-second call on the Wolverines gave Holliston the ball back down three, but Navarro's fall-away three pointer came up short.  Westwood made enough of their free throws on the final two possessions and hung on for the six point win.

Westwood Defeats Medway
in Thriller

As the entire gym held their breath, Medway guard Pat Sheehan's half-court shot as the final horn sounded rimmed out, sealing the host Wolverine's 49-46 victory over the visiting Mustangs.  Westwood, which improved to 7-3 and moved into second place in the Tri-Valley league, had battled back from 4 points down in the final three minutes to earn the victory.  Trailing by 5 at the half, Westwood fought back to tie the game at 30 mid-way through the third quarter. Behind strong offensive performances from junior guard Joe Lally (17 points) and senior captain Glenn Parsons (14 points), Westwood took their first lead since 6-5 when a Parsons layup made it 32-30 Westwood.  Medway continued to match the pace, however, and eventually regained a lead in the fourth quarter after a driving layup by junior Matt Ozzella.  An Eric Tanery three point field goal in the final two minutes gave Westwood back a 47-46 lead that they would never relinquish. With the Wolverines leading by one down the stretch, Parsons made an off-balance runner to add to the lead with just 19 seconds remaining.  Medway came down after a timeout and saw another Sheehan three bounce out.  Westwood then missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw opportunity to set up the dramatic final second of play.  Also making key contributions for the Wolverines were junior John Gebhard, whose yeoman-like work on the glass and on defense were crucial in keeping the Wolverines in the game in the third quarter, and junior Casey McQuillan, whose defense was stellar from start to finish.  Also playing an important role off the bench was senior Erik Maloney (4 points), whose steady performance stopped multiple Medway runs early in the game.  The win is Westwood's second in a row as they prepare for games next week with Bellingham and Holliston.

Hopkinton Hands Westwood Second Straight Loss

After a stretch in which the Westwood Wolverines boys basketball team won five games in a row, clashes with Norton and Hopkinton stood looming on the horizon.  After Tuesday's loss in Norton halted the Wolverines' winning streak, Friday's game at home against Hopkinton served as a great opportunity for Westwood to bounce back and show their mettle.  The Hillers came into the game on a winning-streak of their own and showed the rest of the Tri-Valley League that their rough start to the season was an aberration.  Led by strong play from guards Jason Dlugolecki and Barrett Hanlon, Hopkinton got out to an early lead and held on at the end for a 62-60 thrilling win.  Coach Tom Keane's Hillers opened up a 12-point lead late in the first half, but Westwood cut the lead to 7 in the final thirty seconds, thanks to a three-point field goal by Senior Eric Tanery and a runner by Joe Lally as time expired.  Hopkinton went into the break with a 32-25 lead.  The teams traded baskets in the third quarter and Coach Steve St. Martin's Wolverines went on a run of their own in the fourth to take a lead in the final four minutes.  Hopkinton, however, proved too much down the stretch.  Westwood Senior Erik Maloney's three pointer rimmed out in the final seconds to seal the win for the Hillers. The Wolverines get right back to work on Monday when they travel to Dover-Sherborn High School for a rare late afternoon game against the Raiders.

Wolverines Win at Medfield

Coming off four straight wins, the Westwood boys basketball team had a tough test on Friday at Medfield.  Playing in front of a packed gym, the Wolverines relied on a balanced scoring attack and outstanding team defense to defeat the Warriors, 58-49.  Westwood was led by 10 points each from junior Joe Lally and senior Eric Tanery, who battled through foul trouble the entire night.  The Wolverines, who led 29-25 at the half, came out strong in the third quarter and increased their lead to seven, 44-37, by the end of the frame.  Major contributions to the Wolverines' effort were also made by senior Eric Maloney (7 points), whose key three-pointer padded the Westwood lead late in the fourth quarter, and junior John Gebhard, whose work on the offensive glass deflated Medfield the entire night.  Strong defensive efforts by juniors Jonathan Allegrezza, Casey McQuillan, and senior captains Glenn Parsons and Mike Keane, kept Medfield (4-4), off balance all night.  Medfield was led by junior Johnny McCarthy and Tom Conlon, who contributed 12 points each in the loss.  Westwood (5-1) travels to Norton (5-1) on Monday night in another critical Tri-Valley League clash.
